The Chicago Elite Classic took place on UIC’s campus at the Credit Union 1 Arena. There were a handful of celebrities & coaches cycling throughout the building, but the energy as always came from the students at the respectable schools competing in the classic, bringing that school spirit. Makes me reminisce of my high school years.
The Girls basketball teams shined at Chicago Elite Classic.
Kenwood 72, Vashon 51: They saying goes that shooters shoot, and the Kenwood women’s basketball team in particular did just that by shooting lights out in their match up lead by #3 Natasha Barnes.
Other notable games included Fenwick surviving a late surge to defeat Oak Park River Forest by a score of 64-60.
No. 23 Hyde Park 58, U-High 34: My Alma Mater Hyde Park Career Academy boys’ basketball made a statement with win over Chicago Lab at the Classic. #5 Jurrell Baldwin, a 6-6 junior, scored 22 for HP.
Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.) 77, No. 8 St. Ignatius 59: Chicago favorites Kendall Gill and Will Perdue were sitting in the front row to watch Gill’s son Phoenix, a promising sophomore at St. Ignatius but in the end, Gonzaga was too much to handle. Junior Reggie Ray led St. Ignatius with 19 points.
No. 1 Simeon 86, No. 4 St. Rita 59: Wes Rubin had a magnificent game and scored 21 with 11 boards. Jalen Griffith scored 24 and Sam Lewis added 18 points and 7 boards as The Wolverines took care of business.
No. 18 Mount Carmel 72, North Lawndale 48: Hyde Parks neighbor, Mount Carmel’s basketball program is here to stay.
